DNA-information for Camels

With the introduction of chip or array analytics, we are pioneering the use of modern genetic investigation methods to support the breeding of these extraordinary animals.

The method is applicable to dromedaries, Bactrian camels, and alpacas alike.

About camels: The family of camelids (Camelidae) consists of two genera: Old World and New World camels.

The New World camels include llamas and alpacas classified as domestic animals, as well as the wild guanacos and vicuñas. The genus of Old World camels includes three species: the dromedary, the Bactrian camel, and the wild camel.

Our services

We currently offer the capability to simultaneously type approximately 60,000 SNP markers per camel.

By opting for array typing, we are able to conduct the following assessments on individual animals:

  • Determining parameters of individual genetic diversity

  • Deriving the individual genetic fingerprint (DNA profile 'identity') for unique and tamperproof identification of the animal and for the verification of its origin.

  • Storage of overall data for studies on genetics of traits (genetic diseases and characteristics)

The application of typing individuals in herds or entire breeding populations results in the added value of our DNA-programs.

Advantages of DNA-information from SNP-Arrays

  • Current state of the art
Determining the DNA 'identity' is the preferred method for verifying origin and assessing parentage. Remarkably, for the first time, we can now provide an 'ID profile' for dromedaries, Bactrian camels, and alpacas based on SNP-markers.

  • Immediate assessment of diversity/inbreeding level through genome analysis.

For this analysis, no additional pedigree information are required.

Our special features

  • Personal user account in our online platform 'Animal-Trust-Center' ATC. Track your orders and document the relevant data for your animals in our 'Online Animal Records'. The duration of use and the number of animal records are unlimited and without additional costs.

  • Electronically signed test reports

The digital signature of the PDF files ensures their protection against alteration. Findings signed with an electronic signature can also be transmitted via the open internet and easily verified for integrity. Details can be found in the 'SignCheck' section.

  • Easy mutual use of DNA data of individual animals

Enrolling an animal in the established DNA programs enables camel owners and breeders to collaborate effectively.
